ChatGPT in the Classroom: Understanding Risks and Benefits of Large Language Models

Abstract: With the rise of large language models such as ChatGPT, there is growing concern that students may use AI to partly or entirely write their assignments. Join us for an informative talk on how these models work, the potential cheating implications, and strategies to discourage their use. We will discuss methods to try to detect if these models have been used and how to address the issue. This talk will be accessible to anyone, regardless of previous experience with computer science or artificial intelligence.

Speaker Bio: Alex Olson is a Senior Research Associate at UofT’s Centre for Analytics and AI Engineering. He has studied language models throughout his academic career, and has closely followed the rise of new technologies such as ChatGPT. At CARTE, Alex has worked to develop training resources to bring learners at every level up to speed with the latest advancements in AI and machine learning.
